We’ve been in our apartment for just over a year now and I would say we’re about halfway there to fully decking it out with everything we need. We finally got some art up on the wall the other week and it’s now starting to look a look more like a home that’s lived in. Here are my top home decor tips that I’ve learned as a homeowner.
It’s All About The Levels
What I’ve noticed about our living space – because it’s the only room that’s nearly complete in my eyes – is that levels work really well to help decorate a space. For example, I have our sofa and then frames above it. I have a rug in front of the sofa and then a coffee table on top, which also has a variation of items that differ in height. I don’t know what it is, but that draws the eye to various aspects of the space and gives a different view of the surroundings, depending on where you sit.
Stick To A Theme For Each Room
Each of our rooms will end up having a colour theme. The living room has a grey, dark blue and gold, the kitchen is cream chrome and rose gold. Our main bedroom is going to be grey and yellow and I think the spare room is grey and mauve. Whether you have one main colour, that’s interspersed with other colours or an equal amount, a theme can help you find a direction for what you want that room to look like. It also gives me plenty of scope to work with when taking photos for my blog. It provides a great backdrop!
Create A Fuss-Free Environment
From engineered wood flooring to furniture that also has storage features, a fuss-free environment, certainly makes for a happier home. The bed we picked came with storage underneath, which we simply access by lifting up the bed. It’s so useful for small spaces and utilising the space that we do have to create as much storage as possible for our belongings. Having wooden floor pretty much in every room bar two is also great because we don’t need to necessarily worry too much about spillages and it’s something I’m definitely going to opt for when it comes to the next property we buy.
Try Something Different
Injecting a little bit of your personality into the home decor is important and when I saw these three little gold-painted monkeys from Dunelm, I thought they’d go really nicely on the coffee table. And they did! It’s definitely something I wouldn’t normally buy but it’s true that going for something different could actually end up paying off. So I’m taking this attitude with me when buying other things for the home. Thinking out of the box shall we say…
