When Does A Passion For Sport Become Unhealthy?

There are many benefits to partaking in sports – including watching and physically practising sports. But a passion for sports can also become unhealthy if you take it to extremes. It’s important to prevent your love of sports from going this way. Below are five signs that a sporting passion has become unhealthy. 

Neglecting time for family

Some sports require putting in a lot of training – especially if you’re competing at a professional level. But you need to make sure that you’re not neglecting your family in the process. Schedule quality time with your family so that relationships don’t become strained. Your family should support you in your passion for sports, but it’s also important to be there for them and know when to prioritise family commitments. 

Making the wrong bets

Sports betting is very popular among those who love sports. While many people are sensible, others don’t know when to stop and can develop an unhealthy gambling addiction in which they continue to bet money they don’t have. If you try to set yourself spending limits, but continuously go over them, it may be time to give up sports betting completely. 

Becoming a hooligan

Some people get carried away with the camaraderie and rivalry that comes with being a sports fan, becoming aggressive towards those of the opposite team. Hanging out with the wrong crowd and drinking/taking drugs can fuel this. Make sure that you are being respectful to your opponents. Some friendly banter is fine, but there is no reason to physically or verbally abuse people because of a sport. 

Training too hard

When it comes to actually practising sports, one of the biggest mistakes that people make is training too hard. This is particularly the case with people who are just getting into a sport – many become impatient and end up pushing themselves too far by taking on challenges they’re not ready for. This leads to injuries that can take a while to recover from. Take time to practise and build your physical ability up by following recommended training programs. You will usually know yourself if you are ready to take on a challenge or not.

Ignoring injuries

Once you develop a sports injury, it’s important to take time out to recover. Continuing to train with an injury can often make it worse – and in some cases could shatter your future dreams of ever excelling in the sport. There are many ways to prevent a sports injury from occurring. However, you cannot always avoid an injury.

As disappointing as it can be to have to put goals on hold or even sit out of competitions, you need to think long-term. One missed opportunity is often better than never being able to practise that sport again. Besides, by seeking out treatment early and getting professional help with rehabilitation, you may actually recover faster
