Going on A Cycling Holiday? 5 Things You Need To Take

When it comes to planning a holiday with friends, or even family, some people find the idea of laying on a beach all day to be a bit, well, boring. So, in 2023, there has been an increase in people searching online for less conventional (but still fun!) holiday options. If you are one of these people, have you considered going on a cycling holiday? There are so many places to go on a bike with friends or family!

Popular and beautiful destinations include the island of Mallorca, Spain, Provence in South East France, and, of course, don’t forget historic Tuscany in Italy! Of course, as this kind of holiday is a bit different from the standard option, you may wonder what you need to pack. So, here is a quick checklist for your cycling holiday.

Repair Kit

Mechanical issues can arise during a cycling trip, so it’s important to bring a repair kit. This should include a spare inner tube, tyre levers, a multi-tool, a mini pump, and a patch kit. With these items, you’ll be able to handle basic bike repairs while on the road. Just be sure that the repair kit you take is for your bike type. Many bike repair kits are interchangeable, but some bikes, like Steed Bikes, are going to have a different repair kit to a mountain bike. So, always check!

Proper Cycling Clothing

Cycling clothing is designed to help you ride comfortably and efficiently without feeling sweaty or overly hot. You should pack at least one cycling jersey, a pair of padded cycling shorts, and cycling socks. Depending on the weather conditions, you may also need a cycling jacket, arm and leg warmers, and gloves.

Navigation Tools

Unless you know the route by heart, navigation tools are essential for a successful cycling holiday. This could be as simple as a map and a compass or as advanced as a GPS cycling computer. Of course, as most people now have smartphones, it is entirely possible to simply get an attachment for your smartphone to your bike’s handlebars, which will help you navigate where you are going.

Hydration and Nutrition

Cycling for a long period will be physically demanding, so staying hydrated and fuelled is important. Bring a hydration pack or water bottles, and pack energy bars, gels, or snacks that are easy to eat on the go. Also, when you can, be sure to stop and rest on your route; many places like the aforementioned Provence in France have many cycling routes with cafes spread across them. So, be sure to stop and refuel regularly to keep your energy levels topped up!

Sunscreen and First Aid Kit

When cycling outdoors, you’ll be exposed to the sun for long periods of time, even if the day seems dull. You will need to protect your skin by packing a high-SPF sunscreen. In case of minor injuries or accidents, bring a basic first aid kit that includes bandages, antiseptic, and pain relief medication.
