How To Make Your Kitchen More Functional

One thing that I’ve noticed in our kitchen is that it’s not as functional as we thought it would be. That being said, this is the first property that we own and as far as kitchens go, this one is by far the biggest. Having been in our property now for over a year, for my second year in the apartment, I want to work on making it more functional. So here is how to make your kitchen more functional if you’re after some inspiration yourself.

Hinch Your Kitchen Cupboards

I’m obsessed with Mrs Hinch at the moment. She’s got so many great ideas for her own home that it’s allowed her to create her own book on how to ‘Hinch your home‘. One of the handy features in her kitchen is an under-the-sink kitchen unit which I spotted the other day on her Instagram stories. We’ve got a cupboard underneath the sink, crammed full of cleaning products that are just in disarray. My mission from September is to get this sorted and to have more of our cupboards kitted out with shelves that will make it easier to organise and less likely to create a mess because sometimes me and my partner just like chucking things into cupboards.

Get A Drinks Trolley

A drinks trolley is the next item we need to purchase for our apartment. We’ve got a limited amount of kitchen units and that means a lot of our stuff just spills out onto the kitchen countertops. Getting a drinks trolley will mean that we can put all our spirits and extra bottles of wine, etc in one place and then we can also take all our wine glasses and tumblers, etc and utilise the shelving on the drinks trolley which will then free up more space in the cupboards. The drinks trolley I’m lusting over is this one here.

Keep Your Counter Tops Clear

Your countertops are what everyone can see and if they’re cluttered, then it just looks messy. This is our problem at the moment and I think having more cabinets at our disposal will help. I’ve always thought that we could maybe get a small kitchen island and then replace the kitchen doors, but that’s a project that’s well into the future. However, it’s good practice to just have the bare minimum on them. Mostly your kitchen appliances that you use every day like the kettle and toaster.

Lighting

We don’t have any lighting in our kitchen other than the spotlights and the kitchen vent light. Some of our neighbours on the group WhatsApp that we use to communicate with each other about problems and to catch-up have under cabinet lights. They look so good but they also are very practical when it comes to prepping food. As there’s no window in our kitchen due to the layout of our apartment, that can sometimes make things difficult. So definitely getting some LED stick-on lights soon.
