We’ve all experienced those mornings where you just can’t seem to wake up, even if you got enough sleep the night before. In an effort to perk up when we feel like this, most of us turn to coffee. Too much caffeine can leave you feeling jittery and anxious. There is a better way to have more energy in the morning.
Don’t Hit Snooze
That button on your alarm clock that you can’t resist might not be all that helpful. Spending the last half hour or so of your rest in fragmented sleep has some consequences for your ability to function during the day.
If you can’t do without the snooze, hack the 90 minute sleep cycle by setting two alarms. Set one for when you actually want to wake up, and one for 90 minutes before. The idea is that the 90 minutes of sleep you get will be a full sleep cycle, so you can wake up after your REM state, not during.
Drink A Glass Of Water
Fatigue is often a symptom of dehydraton. Being dehydrated makes you feel tired and can change your cognitive ability and mood for the worse. A glass of water can wake your whole body up before you get moving. If you still can’t shake the feeling of fatigue in the morning, try drinking more water and other noncaffeinated beverages throughout the day. You could also pair your morning water with energy-boosting supplements, like vitamin c and collagen.
Stretch With Yoga
There’s a reason why it feels so good to stretch when you first wake up. Overnight, during your REM sleep, your muscles are literally paralyzed. When you stretch, you reactivate them and release energy-stimulating endorphins.
If you have time for some yoga in the morning, do it. Just twenty-five minutes is enough to boost brain function and your energy levels. A gentle walk can work too.
Splash Your Face With Water
Cold showers certainly wake you up, but if you can’t face a full shower of cold water, you can splash cold water on your face to signal a temperature change to your body.
If you find it hard to get out of bed, keep a spray bottle or water mist by your bed so you can mist yourself without having to move. You can even find morning mists with essential oils to activate your sense. Just be careful with these if you have sensitive skin.
Eat Breakfast
Some people say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. That may or may not be true, but research does show that skipping out on breakfast can have a negative impact on your energy and ability to pay attention during the day.
Remember that food is fuel. Put some calories into your body to get it started for the beginning of your day.
If you work out in the morning, eat after, not before. This will burn more calories, boost your metabolism, and help you to avoid an unsettled stomach. What tips do you suggest to have more energy in the morning?
